Mistake 1: Buying a Rug That’s Too Small
This is the single most common regret. Buyers see a rug in a store, it looks large — then they put it in their living room and it looks like a postage stamp. The rule of thumb: your sofa’s front legs should always sit on the rug, and ideally all four legs of all main furniture pieces. For a standard living room, that means a minimum 8×10. When in doubt, go larger.
Fix: Before shopping, measure your room and mark the rug’s intended dimensions on the floor with painter’s tape. Live with those dimensions for a day before deciding.
Mistake 2: Buying Based on Price Alone
A cheap “Persian” rug that costs $200 at a discount store is almost certainly machine-made or hand-tufted. It will look worn within 5 years and flat within 10. A genuine hand-knotted rug that costs $800 will look better in 20 years than it does today. The cost per year of ownership is dramatically lower on a quality handmade rug.
Fix: Think about cost per year, not sticker price. A $2,000 rug that lasts 50 years costs $40/year. A $300 rug that lasts 8 years costs $37.50/year — and you have to shop again.
Mistake 3: Ignoring the Lighting
Rug colors look completely different in store lighting versus natural daylight versus evening LED lighting. A rug that looks vibrant red in a showroom may look muddy brown in your north-facing bedroom.

A rug pad is not optional — it prevents slipping, extends rug life, protects your floor, and provides cushioning. Budget $50–$200 for a quality pad (natural felt + rubber) depending on your rug size. PVC pads are cheap but can damage hardwood floors over time — invest in quality here.
Mistake 5: Not Asking About the Return Policy
Even experts sometimes find that a rug doesn’t work as expected in a specific room. Before buying, ask clearly: what is the return window? What condition must the rug be in? Who pays return shipping?
